Swastika grew up in Kolkata, India. She earned her PhD degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska. Her thesis research involved the investigation of the role of Polo-Like Kinase 1 and smooth muscle cells in coronary artery bypass conduits and arteries following angioplasty. Before that, Swastika earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biotechnology from Bangalore University, India.
